En Tout Cas designs and builds premium tennis courts across England for use in homes and sports clubs. We have been synonymous with premium tennis courts for over 100 years.
We are a family-run, family-owned business that have been building tennis courts, and sports surfaces, for three generations. We have always understood that the continued success of our business depends upon the satisfaction of our customers. We provide a high-quality service and real value for money. These are reflected in the care and attention to the tennis courts we build and the development of products that are available nowhere else.
We are proud members of SAPCA and all of our courts are built to LTA standards. The SAPCA membership we maintain, means you will receive a tennis court that is built to the highest standards of safety and play.
The LTA (Lawn Tennis Association) standards dictate that construction specialists, like us at En Tout Cas, build with precise practices around court construction, surfaces and lighting to provide the best and safest play.
From foundations through to fence post finials, our approach is to build a tennis court that will give years of enjoyment
You’ll see and feel our commitment to quality; from the moment we visit you to discuss your needs and to survey your proposed site.
We’ll take care of details, such as making sure that the court will fit the area you have in mind, that it is correctly orientated relative to the sun and that it is located on stable ground. We’ll ensure that tree roots won’t be a problem, and that surface chosen will perform well in the location.
Following these initial decisions, we will recommend the most appropriate surface and submit a specification and estimate for a total design and build contract. There will be no shortcuts in material specification, no casual labour and nothing but the very highest standards.
You will get UK-sourced materials that are checked and approved by us before they are used. We will deploy our own construction teams, each of which is led by a foreman who is a highly-experienced, specialist in tennis court construction. To reinforce this dedication to quality assurance, our construction manager will regularly make site visits to carry out detailed quality inspection.
Building a tennis court that will play well, and last for many years, calls for a rigorous, proven approach to construction and the use of the best materials.
The process of construction under the surface of the court is critically important to the court's quality and life. We build to specifications that exceed the minimum standards laid down for the tennis court construction industry. Below is an example of the process used when building a tennis court:.
STAGE 1: We excavate the site, using by laser-controlled machinery.
STAGE 2: If necessary, we lay a perforated plastic pipe in stone to the perimeter. This catches water coming from above, and extracts water from the court's base. We then lay a geotextile weed barrier on the excavated base
STAGE 3: We lay pressed concrete edgings to the perimeter on concrete, with stone underneath, to allow water out to the drain
STAGES 4 AND 5: We roll 40 - 20mm granite to consolidate at a depth of 150mm. For clay sites, we lay a capping layer of gritty stone to a depth of 100mm to stop the clay shrinking and moving. We set galvanised trapdoor lid net post sockets in concrete.
STAGE 6: We drill holes in the ground and set the fence posts in concrete, all the way down. The edgings are then haunched all the way around so that the fence foundation acts as a pile foundation for the edge too.
STAGES 7 AND 8: A 40mm depth of 20mm play base macadam is laid and rolled. The next day, a 6mm open-textured play course is laid by our unique powered straight-edges and rolled to a fine finish. We apply an acrylic or polyurethane finish on top of the macadam for a Pladek service. Alternatively, we lay artificial grass carpets on top for Savanna, Tenniturf or Sporturf surfaces.
This court building process means you have the highest quality court to use in your home or club, that will provide the highest levels of play and, most importantly, enjoyment.

Under normal circumstances, the construction of a tennis court does not require in the garden behind a house.
The planning rules for tennis courts come under and are specifically mentioned in the general rules for outbuildings which state that an enclosure below a height of three metres does not require planning consent.
There are just eight reasons why you would need planning permission for a tennis court.
º The house is listed
º Permitted development rights have been removed
º The house is in anarea of outstanding natural beauty or national park
º Significant civil engineering works are required
º It would be more than 50% of the garden
º It is not in the garden
º It is in front of the main elevation of the house
º Your development includes a two-metre court fence that is within two metres of the property's boundary

This varies and will be dependent on many factors including the extent of the groundworks required, access levels and surface type for your court. As a guide a new tennis court, including groundworks and fencing, can start at £60,000 but can reach up to £95,000 (excluding VAT) for varying surface types.
In most cases planning is not required as the enclose is less than 3 metres. However, if your property is listed, permitted development rights have been removed, the house is in an area of outstanding natural beauty, significant civil engineering works are required, it would take up more than 50% of the garden or it is not in the garden, then planning will need to be investigated. We are able to support with initial considerations if required.
There is no ‘best’ surface, only tennis court surfaces that are best suited to your specific requirements. Each surface offers its own advantages and features which determine the type of play, that suit player abilities and how much maintenance is required. You can find out more about tennis court surfaces here.
A standard tennis court is 78 feet (23.77m) long and 27 feet (8.23m) wide for singles and 36 feet (10.97m) wide for a double. Additional space is then required for run off and fencing. The total space required, when the tennis court is enclosed by a fence, will occupy a space somewhere between 120 feet by 60 feet and 108 feet by 54 feet. A singles-only court can be accommodated in a space 45 feet wide.
If you don’t have enough space for a tennis court you could opt for a pickleball court, which is considerably smaller than a tennis court. Alternatively, a MUGA (multi use games area) can be customised in its size, and can be marked with any lines required to suit the sports you wish to play, making it a flexible alternative. We are able to provide both of these services. See MUGA Installation and Pickleball Court Installation.
